Kevin Smith, if nothing else, is evidence that you can always return home. Clerks III, the newest (but far from final) installment in Smith’s View Askewniverse series, will be distributed by Lionsgate, according to Deadline. Following 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Clerks III is the second sequel to Smith’s first film, Clerks, and the ninth installment in the Askewniverse. Clerks III, like all of Smith’s films, is inspired by events in his life, this time a heart attack and his first picture as a director. Dante Hicks and Randal Graves will be played by Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson, with Rosario Dawson also confirmed as Dante’s now-wife Becky – and, of course, Jay and Silent Bob will be played by Jason Mewes and Smith. In a Facebook post, Smith announced that additional characters will be returning, including Trevor Fehrman as Elias, Jennifer Schwalbach (Smith’s wife) as Dante’s rejected fiancée Emma, and Marilyn Ghigliotti as Veronica, Dante’s first film’s lover. (Unfortunately, Lisa Spoonauer, who portrayed Dante’s infatuation, Caitlin Bree, died many years ago.) There’s no word of Scott Mosier returning to produce, although it would be great if he did, if only for the sake of tradition. Clerks III, Smith’s first picture shot completely in New Jersey since Clerks, is now in pre-production and will begin filming in August. The following is a copy of Smith’s Facebook post:

Every time Kevin Smith announces a new film, I rejoice (even if some of them don’t come out well; that isn’t to say Tusk and Yoga Hosers, but also Tusk and Yoga Hosers), and this is especially true when it’s part of the View Askewniverse. I don’t want to rehash too much of what I said earlier today on Twitter, but the Askewniverse seems soothing to me, like a dream realm where you feel at home. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent a lot of time in New Jersey since I was a kid, and Smith gave it a whole new meaning for me; I feel like these people are all just across the bridge, even if they just live in Smith’s imagination. And, despite all chances and precedent, Smith has a solid reason for returning to his series. Clerks III’s concept is strong, meta in all the right ways, and, most importantly, it’s a tale that’s personal to Smith. In that spirit, I’m most intrigued by Marilyn Ghigliotti’s return; it seems logical that Randal would go back that far to tell his tale, no matter how tough it may be for Dante. In fact, I’m hoping that the presence of Veronica and Emma in the film forces Dante to face his previous errors and see that, as wonderful as things are today, he’s done some bad things to get there. Randal has always been the one to remind out that Dante’s troubles are his own fault, so having his documentary do the same is only appropriate. But most of all, I can’t wait to return to the View Askewniverse and spend more time with these wonderful people. I’d also want to see Die Hard in a Mall at some time, as long as wishes are horses.
