FFXI Travesty Guide: How to Get the New Shadow Lord Weapon and Is It Worth It

Travesty is the brand new Great Sword the Shadow Lord hands out during the second session of The Shadow Lord’s Dominion in FFXI. You get it through a Curator Moogle trade, not as a battlefield drop. Below, we cover its full stats, the exact steps to unlock the trade, the battlefield entry rules, and an honest verdict on whether Travesty deserves a spot in your gear set.

How to Get Travesty in FFXI

The Curator Moogle holds Travesty for the event window. The trade runs from Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 1:00 a.m. (PDT) to Monday, October 12, 2026, at 7:59 a.m. (PDT). Keep some FFXI Gil ready too, in case the list asks for items you can buy from the Auction House.

Follow these steps to claim it. If the list includes crafted parts, a small FFXI Gil reserve saves you a crafting detour.

  1. Check the trade list first. Talk to a Curator Moogle and see which items it wants for Travesty.
  2. Clear the event battlefield. Run ★The Shadow Lord Battle and collect spoils.
  3. Gather the full set of items. Pick up any other materials the moogle lists.
  4. Trade everything to the Curator Moogle. All traded items are consumed, so double check before you hand them over.

Curator Moogle locations:

  • Chateau d’Oraguille (H-9), San d’Oria
  • Metalworks (J-8), Bastok
  • Heavens Tower, Clerical Chamber, Windurst

A quick tip from past runs: earlier Shadow Lord trades, like the statue and the shirt, used battlefield spoils such as Lament as components. So do not throw away any Lament, Extinction, or Nihility drops until you have read the Travesty list in game.

Shadow Lord’s Dominion Battlefield Requirements

You enter the battle by examining the Throne Room door in Castle Zvahl Keep. Before that, you need three things:

  • Level 95 or higher
  • Completion of the Rank 5 nation mission
  • The “Shadow Lord phantom gem” key item

The gem costs 10 merit points. You can buy it from any of these NPCs:

NPC

Location

Trisvain

Northern San d’Oria (J-7)

Raving Opossum

Port Bastok (J-11)

Mimble-Pimble

Port Windurst (L-5)

Battlefield Rules and Difficulty

Difficulty

Very Easy to Very Difficult (5 levels)

On your first entry, you can only pick Very Easy, Easy, or Normal. Clearing Normal unlocks Difficult and Very Difficult. Spoils can drop on any setting, but higher difficulties raise your odds.

Our advice is simple. Clear Normal once with a full party, then farm Difficult if your group handles it comfortably. You save more time with better drop odds than with faster but weaker clears. Difficult runs burn through food and potions fast, so some players buy FFXI Gil to keep their supplies topped up.

What the Regain and Free Weapon Skill Effects Actually Do

Regain grants TP every 3 seconds. At +5, Travesty gives you roughly 100 TP per minute without swinging. That adds up during downtime, pulls, and fights where you stand back to dodge.

The 5% chance to keep your TP after a weapon skill is a small bonus. Over a long fight, it can give you an occasional back-to-back weapon skill. Do not build around it, but you will notice it.

Is Travesty Worth It in FFXI?

Short answer: yes for most players, but not as a top-end damage weapon.

Your main costs are 10 merit points for the gem, some battlefield runs, and the Curator Moogle materials. There is no multi-week upgrade path. That makes the value very high for what you put in.

Here is how it fits different players:

Player type

Verdict

Returning or new level 99 players

Strong pick. It beats most starter Great Swords right away.

RUN and PLD tanks

Useful. HP, VIT, and Parrying skill help a Great Sword tank set.

DRK or WAR with Aeonic, Ergon, or full Relic Great Swords

Situational. Your endgame weapon still hits harder.

Glamour and collectors

Worth grabbing. It is a limited event reward.

The Regain pairs well with open world content, Trust parties, and solo play. You start fights with TP more often, which speeds up clears. In high-end content, damage per hit and weapon skill bonuses matter more, and dedicated endgame swords win there.

Best Jobs for Travesty

  • Rune Fencer: Parrying skill and HP make it a comfortable solo and tank option.
  • Dark Knight: Regain helps keep weapon skills flowing between big hits.
  • Warrior: A solid backup Great Sword for WAR players who lack upgraded ones.
  • Paladin: Niche, since most PLD sets use a sword and shield. Still fine for Great Sword builds.

Things to Keep in Mind Before the Event Ends

  • The trade window closes on October 12, 2026. Missing it means waiting for another Curator Moogle rotation, which has no confirmed date.
  • The battlefield returns once more in October for its third and final session. The official notice has not confirmed whether the Travesty trade will stay open then, so do not delay.
  • Travesty is Rare and Ex. You can only hold one, and you cannot pass it to an alt.
  • We have not seen any augment or upgrade path for it so far.

Conclusion

Travesty is one of the easiest good weapons Final Fantasy XI has offered in a while. The Regain and free weapon skill chance make it a strong everyday Great Sword for WAR, DRK, PLD, and RUN. It will not replace a finished Aeonic or Ergon weapon, but it costs very little to get. Unlock the phantom gem, clear the battlefield, check the Curator Moogle list, and grab it before October 12. If you play any Great Sword job in FFXI, we see no good reason to skip it.
