NASA to Retire International Space Station by Crashing It into the Pacific Ocean

NASA is considering crashing the International Space Station into the Pacific Ocean sometime in 2028 to avoid a costly environmental cleanup. Crashes will be prevented by tethering rockets to the station, which has given it an additional lifespan of around 500 years at this point.

NASA has disclosed that it aims to retire the famous satellite by 2031 by crashing it into a remote section of the Pacific Ocean known as Point Nemo, according to a new International Space Station Transition Report. Officially designated as “the oceanic pole of inaccessibility” and named after one of the main characters from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, Nemo is the furthest place in the ocean from land. Within a decade, the International Space Station will be decommissioned to make room for commercial destinations and markets in what NASA calls a “thriving space economy.”

NASA and its allies have assessed a number of Russian Progress spacecraft and decided that three are capable of de-orbiting.
Additionally, Northrop Grumman has been improving the propulsion capabilities of its Cygnus spacecraft, and NASA is considering if Cygnus may be part of the vehicle capability required to de-orbit the ISS.

Point Nemo is the furthest point in the ocean from land, and has been a watery burial for many previous spacecraft. It is named after the submarine sailor in Jules Verne’s book “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”
Since 1971, space-faring nations such as the United States, Russia, Japan, and European countries are said to have buried more than 263 pieces of space debris in the region, which is around 3,000 miles off New Zealand’s eastern coast and 2,000 miles north of Antarctica.
