Jason Momoa is in final discussions to feature in a live-action rendition of Microsoft and Mojang Studios’ famous sandbox computer game, Minecraft, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jared Hess, the director of one of 2004’s greatest comedies, Napoleon Dynamite, will direct the movie for Warner Bros.

There’s no word on who Momoa will portray in the film yet, but the odds are stacked in favor of Steve, one of Minecraft’s playable heroes and default character skins. Alex might also be a contender, however it would be strange to see the actor, who is known for playing rugged dudes, dressed as a lady.

Denis Villeneuve’s big-budget version of Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi book, Dune, released last year, featured Momoa as warrior Duncan Idaho. In 2023, he’ll return to the big screen as Arthur Curry in James Wan’s Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Mary Parent and Roy Lee, who produced Dune, will produce the picture, with Jill Messick earning a posthumous producing credit for her work on the project before her death in 2018. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts are among the executive producers. The video game was created by Mojang Studios in Sweden, and the film was also produced by Lydia Winters and Vu Bui from Mojang.

Minecraft was released in 2011 and lets users to build constructions and planets out of bricks. The game was a hit, with 100 million players within a few years after its release, prompting Microsoft to buy Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.

For years, Warners has been developing a film based on the game, with Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia among those connected to helm.
