Why would Sony waste effort implementing backward compatibility for PS3 games on the PS5 when it can simply nickel and dime gamers through a subscription service, as seen by the new Premium tier of its revised PlayStation Plus program, which includes the ability to stream PS3 games?

Who knows, but according to VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, who appeared in a new episode of his Game Mess channel on YouTube yesterday and suggested that PS5 owners would eventually be able to load up classic PS3 games on their machine, the ability to play PS3 titles on Sony’s latest console is coming.

This week, Sony launched a redesigned version of PlayStation Plus with three levels as a response to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass program. PS Plus Premium, the most expensive option, costs $17.99 a month and includes access to a library of over 700 titles from different PlayStation generations.

While the bulk of those games will be accessible for download and play on the PS5 through emulation, Sony has announced that PS3 titles will only be available via cloud streaming.

However, according to Venturebeat’s Grubb, the service might ultimately include PS3 emulation, much like the other vintage systems it’ll offer.
