Netflix has released the first trailer for their upcoming sci-fi thriller Adam, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man who wakes up from cryogenic suspension in an apocalyptic wasteland and must learn how to survive. While there’s no real connection between this new film and the original 1987 movie starring Michael Biehn, fans are already comparing it to that classic.
The “the adam project cast” is a movie about the future of humanity and the rise of artificial intelligence. It stars Ryan Reynolds as an Adam, who has been sent back in time to 1984 to stop Skynet from becoming self-aware.
OVERVIEW OF THE MOVIE – What if you could revisit your childhood conversations with your parents as an adult? To get an understanding with your younger self? Could you put the past or the future, for example? Shawn Levy’s ingenious time-travel thriller “The Adam Project” poses this topic pretty practically. As our hero encounters his young self, the film is evocative of a short tale by Frigyes Karinthy.
In the film Free Guy, Levy and actor Ryan Reynolds worked. The Adam Project, written by Jonathan Tropper, T.S. Nowlin, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin, builds on Reynolds’ “big-talking action hero” routine in a similar way, enabling him to shine in both comedy and classic action films.
“Time travel is real; you simply don’t realize it yet”…
… is the film’s joke at the start, before we get into the sci-fi action-adventure. Surprisingly, the film’s theme is originally more concerned with the symbolic repair of the father-son bond than with real time travel.
The plot revolves on a grown-up Adam (Ryan Reynolds) who travels from 2050 to 2022 and lands in his old garden, where young Adam is attempting to survive his 12 years as an extraordinarily intelligent, pubescent adolescent who only exists in the past. He has to fix his starship and treat a gunshot wound, so he has plenty of time to visit with his younger self. Big Adam was supposed to go back to 2022 to look for his lost wife (Zoe Saldaa), but he accidentally traveled back to 2018.
Of course, it won’t be easy, as the bad people will be on Adam’s tail shortly, and he and young Adam will have to flee from Maya Sorian, a malevolent time-traveling tech billionaire (Catherine Keener). The only way to put things right is to go back in time and locate their father (Mark Ruffalo) before he invents time travel.
Returning to the classic films
The Adam Project is obviously influenced by films like Back to the Future and Terminator, both of which are mentioned in the screenplay. There are, however, parallels to other, more contemporary films, such as Rian Johnson’s time-travel thriller Looper or other aspects of the film that recall Guardians of the Galaxy, in which Zoe Saldaa also featured. The Adam Project is a throwback adventure film in which a smart child and a desperate adult play the roles of the “Odd Couple,” but with more battle lasers and killer robots. Despite the difficulties of time travel shown here, the narrative does not seem to be creative or unique.
The Adam Project is distinguished by its down-to-earth style. The Pacific Northwest’s wooded, organic nature serves as a background for the highly high-tech future weaponry of invisible aircraft and bow wands of “lightsabers.” The juxtaposition of the world of 2022 with the weaponry of 2050 is especially striking in the early half of the film, and this difference also represents the connection between the two Adams.
It would have been nicer if it had happened on Father’s Day.
The opening part of the film is the most engrossing, as the older and younger Adam tug at one other, asking each other difficult questions and finding out their job together. But it all comes crashing down in the cliched third act, when the heroes are forced into a typical standoff to rescue the planet. Furthermore, on the altar of tacky sentimentality, any complexity of the discourse about reconciling their past and present is lost.
By the time the film reaches its conclusion, it has already moved beyond emotional resonance and into the domain of patronizing (failed) emotional manipulation. It’s odd that Netflix didn’t release this time-traveling picture on Parent’s Day since it’s so full of the normal (very clichéd) father concerns. Unfortunately, what should have been thought-provoking ends up being a retread of the standard sci-fi action movie clichés.
The sights and action in 4K/HDR are excellent.
You won’t be disappointed if all you want is a magnificent and engaging sci-fi action movie and a 4K TV. The graphics were extremely vivid in spots on my 4K TV thanks to Netflix’s needle-sharp streaming (maybe I got fortunate), and this action sci-fi was a fantastic treat for my eyes as a consequence. The action scenes were typically exhilarating and well-choreographed; maybe only the last huge “confrontation” was a tad undemanding.
The Adam project will appeal to those who don’t mind a formulaic but spectacular action film based on and remixing previous sci-fi classics, with a predictable and amusing Ryan Reynolds, who once again delivers an entertaining performance with his usual well-performed, laugh-out-loud quips, while pulling his little-boy self.
